Paul Hempel

Mr. Hempel served as General Counsel (1999-2007), Secretary (2000 – 2010) Sr. Vice President of Leadership Development and Human Resources (2006-2010) and Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer (2010-2014) at ALERE INC. (NYSE:ALR; f/k/a Inverness Medical Innovations, Inc., acquired by ABBOTT Labs, October 2017). In his roles at Alere, he helped develop strong HR and compliance programs and to become a significant medical device company and leading manufacturer of HIV rapid tests. During his career he has developed professional expertise in mergers and acquisitions, legal services management, HR and people management and compliance.

Since his retirement in 2014, Paul has served on a number of non-profit Boards of Directors, including Cascade AIDS Project (6 years), HIV Alliance (6 years), WILD Rivers Land Trust (Port Orford, OR – 4 years), South Coast Health Equity Coalition (2 years), Pacific NW Leathermen’s Campout (2 years) and Automatic Musical Instrument Collectors’ Association.

Paul currently serves as working Treasurer of Automatic Musical Instruments Collectors’ Association, a non-profit international collectors’ association of approximately 1,000 members worldwide. He received a BA from Middlebury College, a JD from Northeastern University School of Law and Paul holds certificates in French and International Finance and Fiscal Law. Paul and his husband Bruce live in Curry County. Prior to his work with Alere, Mr. Hempel practiced law for many years, with a legal practice which included commercial litigation, corporate law and international mergers and acquisitions. He spent 14 years at Bowditch & Dewey, in Worcester, MA, a 75 plus lawyer firm, where he managed the firm’s Corporate Practice. He also spent 5 years as Managing Partner at Erickson, Shaffer, Peterson, Hempel and Israel, a boutique international corporate merger and acquisitions firm in Wellesley, MA specializing in international transactions. In addition, early in his career, Mr. Hempel spent 4 years as Assistant General Counsel at Michelin Tire Corporation in Greenville, SC, New York City and Clermont-Ferrand, France. Prior to retiring, he also served as a director and officer with several non-profit organizations, including Worcester County Habitat for Humanity and the AIDs Support Group of Cape Cod.

Paul and his husband, Bruce Newman, currently live in Gold Beach, Oregon and together have 6 adult children and 11 grandchildren. Paul has lived with HIV since 2010 and has devoted much of his post-retirement work to HIV prevention and serving the HIV community.
